YAFID 2010 ANNUAL REPORT

YOUTH ACTION FOR INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT
(YAFID)
2010 ANNUAL REPORT

“An Empowered Youth, a Developed Nation”

MARCH 16, 2011

PREFACE

This report satisfies a statutory requirement that the Executive Director reports on the work of the organization to the Board of Directors.

Activities and developments within the organization during the year under review have been guided by its mission “to build the capacities and empower African youth to make meaningful contribution to national developments” through quality research, entrepreneurship and knowledge dissemination.

This report reflects the proportion of works done during the year 2010 under review and also encapsulates plans for 2011.  It is gratifying to see efforts made by the various executive offices under the executive directorate to generate resources to ensure that the organization is sufficiently endowed to be considered a deserving member of renowned centre of excellence and a budding social entrepreneur in Africa.

The organization, in the period under review, has gone through some turbulent times. We are however working hard towards putting these problems behind us, a task which requires the cooperation and effort of all stakeholders.

The Executive Directorate has called for amendments of YAFID’s constitution to enable a critical assessment of the organization’s activities.  With the completion of this exercise, we have started implementing the new constitution which has brought about much flexibility, creativity and innovation to improve upon our mandated works and to improve upon the quality of our deliveries.

I am grateful to all our benefactors who have made substantial donations towards the development of the organization.

Our thanks go to the Board of Directors for being solidly behind us in all our activities.

My gratitude also goes to members of the Executive Directorate and indeed the entire members, for the support this organization continues to enjoy from them.

Board of Directors meeting always marks a high point in the life of the Organization  and  I take the opportunity to wish all everybody present success as we embark on a new life in the world of work.

REPORT ON AREAS OF OPERATION

 Entrepreneurship

The year under review was very successful under our entrepreneurship component. YAFID undertook a research to have in place, an authentic fact as recommended by the Board during the 2009 Board of Directors meeting for our entrepreneurial based programmes. YAFID was motivated by the various entrepreneurial activities started on various campuses across the country which usually, is thrown into history dust-bin or shelved after completion of school with a motive of search for white colour jobs.

The research was carried in conjunction with Voice of Rumor, an independent and neutral research club based on University of Ghana Legon campus. The main aim of the research was to gather evidential details on students’ entrepreneurial activities during and after school to help us in developing programmers as well as policy formulation and directions. The research was extensively carried out (Please find the attached data collection sheet) in four main public tertiary institutions namely; University of Ghana Legon, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast and Accra Polytechnic.

Research data collection and analysis has been successfully completed. YAFID now has the task of building the networks necessary to effectively make use of the outcome to the benefit of the youth. To that effect, several meetings have been carried out with our entrepreneurial partner (African Aurora Business Network (AABN) during the research data analysis stages.

With these evidential facts before us, YAFID is in the process of developing an Entrepreneurial Incubation Programme (Please find the attached extract of the programme) which we hope will be one of the innovative entrepreneurial programmes to be run in African. In addition, we are in the process of developing a competitive programme for the UN-Habitat Youth Fund which ends April 2011. We will contact each member of YAFID for inputs and directions.

YAFID was shortlisted and enrolled on the Trainer of Trainers Youth and National Budget Programme organized by Youth Bridge Foundation at GIMPA. YAFID’s impact was heavily felt as we coordinated almost all the sessions.

Health and Education

The year under review also witnessed the organization of a blood donation exercise at Accra Polytechnic campus. Being the first ever organized exercise, it afforded YAFID to build the required network for future blood donation exercises and also to familiarize with the students for a possible YAFID Accra Polytechnic Students’ Club.

The exercise which was carried out with the support from the National Blood Bank, Polytechnic Engineers’ Students Association of Ghana (PESAG), and Polytechnic Association Students of Science Laboratory Technologists and Technicians (PASLAT) on April 21, 2010 at Accra Polytechnic campus from 8:00am – 5:00pm witnessed an unprecedented 45 voluntary donors (please find the attached list of some of the donors) on the day of the event. Female participation was encouraging as they turned out in their numbers to saved lives.

YAFID have the aim of piloting the exercise in as many institutions as possible with the target of rolling out a detailed yearly time table for effective implementation of the exercise.

Plans are already advanced to undertake this year’s blood donation exercise scheduled for March 23, 2011 at the University of Ghana Legon Students’ Clinic (Central Cafeteria). The university hospital has firmly agreed and requested for a 40% donated bloods be reserved with the national blood bank for use at the Students’ Clinic. We are firmly awaiting the National Blood Blank for their letter of response to complete the process.

In addition, sponsorship and request for media air time letters (21 letters) have been sent out. We are currently undertaking the follow-up exercises which we hope will yield some considerable support for the exercise.

The educational aspect of our health component saw YAFID executives (Executive Director and Programmes Coordinator) joined forces with staff of DREAM Ghana in implementing an HIV/AIDS programme under the Global Fund Round 8 HIV prevention and Stigma Reduction Project. This led our Programmes Coordinator to enroll for an HIV/AIDS course with the Simon Frazer University through University of Ghana Legon, Institute of Continuing and Distance education. This we hope will enrich our human resource for effective programmes.

Environment

In 2009, YAFID chaired the capacity building programmes for youth environmentalist here in Ghana. 2010 saw our Programmes Coordinator who is currently a World Bank/British Council trained Mater Trainer on climate change. This success was made possible when he emerged among the 40 youth across the globe who selected through a competitive proposal competition on climate change.

With this knowledge and skills available, he implemented two important projects for the World Bank and British Council on climate change in the Volta Region of Ghana. That is, a capacity building programme on climate change for all youth leaders within the Keta Municipality with support from the Keta Municipal Assembly and the World Bank/British Council.

He as well implemented another climate change programme for students of Anlo Senior High School.

In addition, YAFID made use of the Radio Univers in educating the wider public on the effects of climate change and the needed steps to take in curbing the ever ending effects.

Information Communication and Technology
Activities and developments within the ICT sector were centered on putting the structures together for an effective roll-out of programmes. Much attention was given to finding a suitable and cost effective website designer.

The first website designer engaged could not complete his works due to inability to complete some specifications YAFID recommended. The second designer though competent, charges GH350 for designing only. Though he is now proposing GH200, we explored third option who proposes GH₵100 for designing and hosting, but the quality of his works will not at first sight market YAFID as a reputable organization.

Due to these developments, YAFID initiated its own blog, facebook page and a new e-mail system (www.youthactionforintegrateddevt.blogspot.com, youth action for integrated development-facevook, and yafidghana@gmail.com). We hope to seek directions from the Board for an effective and timely official website to fast track our activities.

With this structures put in place, effective and innovative programmes within this sector will be rolled out for the public to benefit.

Good Governance & Parliamentary Democracy
The period under review saw the organization of series of radio programmes. This was tailored to engage students to participate in matters of good governance and imbibing in them the ethos of how our parliament functions. This YAFID effectively executed every Monday on Radio Univers at 13 - 14hrs GMT.

Registration of YAFID Students’ Club
The Executive Directorate has instituted a registration process for University of Ghana Legon YAFID Students’ Club for which we are required to provide other supporting documents to the Office of the Dean of Students. The directorate will communicate to the board of the outcome.

As we gather as a family today, YAFID congratulates the Executive Director for
  1. Emerging as the winner of the TEWU Chairmanship position contested here at University of Ghana Legon branch and for that matter, now a member of University of Ghana council
  2.  Last 20 finalists for 2010 myjoy 2010 Business organized by Joy FM 99.7
  3. A 7 member government constituted review committee to review the national youth policy

We also congratulates the Programmes Coordinator (Sabutey K. Victus) for

In addition, we wish every member of YAFID who God has blessed with a lovely wive and children a happy fruitful marriage and an increase in YAFID’s membership.

Lastly, we humble ourselves before you our Board of Directors for your advices and wish to state that recommendations and every form of support is worth appreciating.

Long live YAFID.
Signed
Saakuur Augustine Karbo
